Dark Leverage book cover by Kit Yarber

For anyone who has had to learn the room because the polite explanation did not explain enough.

Inside the book

A practical map for work, scenes, money, attention, and exits.

Each chapter isolates one operating layer: status, dependency, attention, reputation, framing, negotiation, conflict, creative work, and ethical influence.

01

Structural power

See how position, dependency, options, and timing shape outcomes before a conversation begins.

02

Influence without begging

Learn how evidence, incentives, silence, and framing create consent without desperation or performance.

03

Negotiation under pressure

Understand anchors, concessions, alternatives, walkaways, and the discipline of needing the deal less.

04

Manipulation defense

Name the tactics that create confusion, guilt, false urgency, dependency, and distorted reality.

05

Reputation and status

Manage the shadow version of you that enters rooms before you do, without becoming hollow or fake.

06

Long-game leverage

Build durable options, relationships, judgment, and authority that compound instead of burning out.

Positioning

Not a self-help pep talk. Not a manipulation manual.

This is a defensive and strategic guide for navigating real human systems. It has teeth, but it is not a handbook for being a creep. It explains the terrain so the reader can act with more agency, cleaner judgment, and stronger ethical control.

  • Written in direct, unsentimental language.
  • Designed for practical reading, not motivational performance.
  • Useful across work, creative scenes, negotiation, reputation, conflict, and personal boundaries.

Origin

Built in the gap after the floor dropped.

In October, I got laid off. The stretch after that was not inspirational in the clean way people package it later. It was job tabs, money math, favors, silence, music coming back into the room, and learning enough code to build the scaffolding around my own work.

People helped me through it. Some contributed to or shared the GoFundMe. Some checked in, sent work, made introductions, listened, or kept treating me like a human being when the situation got ugly and procedural. Thank you.

Dark Leverage came out of that pressure: dependency, timing, reputation, asking for help, building exits, and learning which rooms actually control the outcome.

Free chapter

Start where the theory stops being theory.

Chapter 1 establishes the central distinction: power is not dominance. It is the capacity to shape outcomes.

“The naive artist negotiates as if the song is the only variable. The sharper artist reads the whole room.”
